Springboks’ Strategic Loss to All Blacks Leads to SA Rugby aiming for Rematch

Rassie Erasmus Springboks head coach of the Springboks has made several alterations to the team that suffered a heavy loss to New Zealand’s All Blacks in the third round of the Rugby Championship. The Head Coach of South Africa’s national team has decided to press forward would putting the next generation of the national team on the field behind the scrum. This follows their harsh defeat by their arch-rivals in Auckland.

The only similarities with the previous line up are that Cheslin Kolbe has remained in the same position in the backline on the right wing with Canaan Moodie, who started on the left. He has now been shifted to the centre this weekend.

That means captain from that clash Jesse Kriel has been ousted from the team with Moodie partnering Damian Willemse, who has never played 12 at Test level, in a new-look midfield partnership. Ethan Hooker takes Moodie’s former position on the left wing and Aphelele Fassi is at full-back to complete the back three. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Cobus Reinach are in the half-back slots after impressive cameos on Saturday, with Handre Pollard ousted from the 23 entirely. Besides Reinach and Kolbe, it is a much younger backline with the head coach no doubt looking at his options ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. “This is an exciting team, which we believe will provide us with the forward power we require, and spark in the backline against a quality All Blacks side,” Erasmus said.

“We’ve maintained consistency in selection to a large degree in the last few matches, but apart from what we feel some of the players selected can add to our attack, we’d like to see what some of the players can do against the top-ranked team in the world.

The new changes being made to the country’s top rugby team could prove to be very beneficial in the long run. If Erasmus has played his cards right. Rugby is a ruthless sport that demands competing teams give their results. There is no room for weakness. The Springboks reshuffle will see the removal of the old, experienced and familiar with the untested, talented and new. It remains to be seen what the faith of the old in the likes of Jesse Kriel will do. Will he and other former team members move to other rugby clubs overseas or will they retire into obscurity. Professional adult Rugby is brutal and takes no prisoners. The training for the 2027 World Rugby Championships will require all team members to be peak athletes and sportsmen.

South African rugby requires its national champions to be well prepared and trained. There can be no prisoners this time around. With a shift in talent Erasmus should prepare his new team ensemble to be ready for what ever their opponents throw their way. There can be no room for defeat.

In a blockbuster third round of the Rugby Championship, the Springboks ultimately fell short against the All Blacks at Eden Park, while a late try from the Wallabies enabled them to claim a hard-fought win over Argentina. It’s made a big difference to the Rugby Championship standings, with New Zealand now well placed at the top with 10 logs points, just ahead of second placed Australia (nine points). The Springboks’ title defence is in turmoil as South Africa and Argentina now are level on five log points, and with the same points differential.

South Africa may have suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Kiwis, but they will bounce back. The All Blacks proved themselves a formidable team that closed ranks around the Springboks. The match at Eden Park may have pushed the Springboks back down the logs points but a new opportunity for victory will avail itself. Australia and Argentina were also tough nuts to crack, more so Australia but the Argentinians eventually gave way to the Springboks. Most South Africans will look at losing the match to the All blacks with disappointment. However South Africa can only learn from its mistakes as the brutality and winner takes all attitude of rugby knows no bounds.
