BRICS plus War Drills in South Africa earn Washington’s Ire

Pretoria has played host to the BRICS Plus bloc’s military exercise drills off South Africa’s coast. The drills known as WILL FOR PEACE 2026, have attracted the anger of the United States governing establishment. This time the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has accused the government of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African Department of Defence of undermining American national security.

The accusation came a day after the U.S. embassy lambasted South Africa for allowing Iran to participate in military drills that took place of the coast of Cape Town. The Russian and Chinese navies also participated in the exercises.

“South Africa continues to give the United States the middle finger,” the committee said in a statement posted on X on Friday. “They will find out quick they are on the losing side between the US and China.” The pilot school, located in the southern town of Oudtshoorn, was added to the US Commerce Department’s export-control Entity List in 2023. The forfeiture action involved the interdiction of two mission crew trainers (MCTs) that were in transit from TFASA to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), according to the Justice Department.

MCTs are mobile classrooms that the department said were intended to help the PLA train personnel in the use of airborne warning and control systems and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.

US President Donald Trump and his Republican Party have not issued the kindest statements, regarding South Africa. Although there have been attacks on farmers in the South African rural areas, these have been indiscriminate targeting both white farmers and black employees.

By the nature of its constitution and foreign policy, South Africa pursues a policy of non-alignment. The nation strives for neutrality on the world stage while maintaining associations with all geopolitical alliances. South Africa cooperates closely with all nations and international bodies. In the case of Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran that can require military cooperation.

As long as the focus remains on defensive rather than offensive operations, the South African Defence Force (SANDF) has made it clear the Movement Control Team (MCT)s are intended for training and signalling purposes. However, U.S. Military and foreign policy analysts have argued that Beijing may weaponize any information gathering-technology in its possession to support an expansionist policy across the Pacific region, with Taiwan as its starting point.

The drills are designed to improve joint maritime safety operations among participating navies. Activities include interoperability training and coordinated manoeuvres that help units work together more efficiently in real sea operations. South African defence sources say such exercises help navies learn from one another and build mutual understanding in challenging sea conditions. In practical terms, this means warships, support vessels and naval crews are conducting exercises off the Cape coast close to the Simon’s Town Naval Base near Cape Town. The varied geography of the region presents an ideal location for testing readiness in both deep water and coastal scenarios.

China is taking a leading role in the operations with substantial involvement from its People’s Liberation Army Navy units. Russian warships and Iranian vessels also form a core part of the assembled fleet. Observers note that each of these navies brings a different set of capabilities, which contribute to the complexity and depth of the exercise.

From a diplomatic perspective, these joint navy drill exercises are meant to strengthen ties between allied nations. They serve the purpose of forging cultural understanding and friendships.  Joint military exercises are an exchange and cooperation of knowledge and defence tactics. Military life is demanding in the highest terms, and military cooperation requires the highest discipline. Alertness and preparedness at all times, is the purpose of these exercises. The reason why Pretoria went ahead with the joint exercises, was to send a warning and a message to Washington: in the wake of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s capture by U.S. Special forces and air strikes on northern Venezuela, South Africa will be ready.

That is to say, South Africa and its BRICS allies will be ready. Washington’s ruling elite may not realize it yet, but the unilateral military operations and imposition of tariffs on key regional powers such as South Africa, are uniting the developing world. Trump chose the path of having the U.S. flex its diplomatic and economic muscle, only to have the nation’s rivals (including South Africa) flex back.
