Bulk Carrier Collides With Quay at Port of Durban

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has confirmed that a bulk carrier collided with a quay at the Port of Durban on the night of August 31. TNPA confirmed the incident the following Wednesday.

Authorities moved the damaged vessel to an alternative berth as investigations get underway. Emergency response and operational teams deployed immediately after the collision, and the carrier is now undergoing inspection.

“At this stage, there have been no reports of injuries and investigations will commence as soon as possible to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” TNPA said.

Footage Shows Vessel Striking Quay

Footage circulating on social media shows the vessel moving toward the side of the harbour before striking the quay. Photos taken after the collision show visible damage to the ship, though the full extent of damage to the vessel and port infrastructure remains unconfirmed.

TNPA said it will examine the evidence to establish what led to the collision, working alongside relevant regulatory authorities and stakeholders.

According to vessel-tracking data cited by SA Truckers, the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier Hawk S arrived at Durban Harbour on August 31, the night of the collision. SA Truckers identified the vessel’s IMO number as 1082782, with a length of approximately 180 metres and a beam of around 30 metres.

Environmental Group Demands Transparency

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) has called for a transparent investigation into the collision, citing concerns over potential marine pollution, ecological damage, public safety and the structural integrity of port infrastructure.

“The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance writes to inquire on information regarding the reported collision involving the vessel HAWK S at the Port of Durban on September 1, 2026,” the organisation said. “SDCEA is concerned about the potential implications of this incident for marine and coastal environmental protection, pollution prevention, public safety and the structural integrity of port infrastructure.”

SDCEA has requested confirmation on whether the collision caused, or risked causing, pollution from fuel, marine diesel, lubricating oil, hydraulic fluids, hazardous substances or damaged cargo.

Investigation Ongoing

TNPA’s investigation will examine the actions of the captain and crew at the time of the collision, including who was steering the vessel and giving direction. TNPA has not yet confirmed further details.

“The safety of port users, employees, contractors and port infrastructure remains TNPA’s highest priority,” the authority said. TNPA said it would provide further updates once it verifies additional information.
