South Africa’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia after suffering a hamstring injury. His absence is a major setback for the Proteas, with doubts also surrounding his availability for the following Test series.

Rabada Ruled Out of ODIs
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Rabada sustained a right hamstring strain and will miss the three ODIs starting 24 September 2026 in Durban.
“His availability for the three‑match Test series against Australia will depend on how he progresses through rehabilitation, with a decision to be made closer to the series,” CSA said in a statement.
Test Series Doubt
Rabada’s domestic bowling coach, Allan Donald, told South African media that the injury could sideline him for up to 10 weeks. The first Test begins on 9 October in Durban, followed by matches in Gqeberha and Cape Town. Losing Rabada would be a huge blow for South Africa, who defeated Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s last year, where Rabada took nine wickets.
Rabada’s Record Against Australia
- Average vs Australia: 21.39 in 11 Tests
- Career Average: 22.03
- Known for pace, bounce, swing, and relentless follow‑through, Rabada has consistently troubled Australian batters.

Impact of Injury
Rabada’s absence leaves a significant void in the South African bowling attack. Emerging talents such as Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, and youngster Kwena Maphaka are expected to shoulder greater responsibility. CSA is also monitoring Nandre Burger, who is recovering from a stress fracture and may return in time for the Test series.
Hamstring Injuries in Cricket
Fast bowlers are particularly vulnerable to hamstring strains due to the explosive load placed on the lower body during delivery strides and follow‑through. Rabada’s injury highlights the physical demands of professional cricket, where pace bowling often leads to recurring muscle strains.
Proteas Outlook

Despite Rabada’s absence, South Africa will aim to outmanoeuvre Pat Cummins’s Australia in both ODIs and Tests. The Proteas boast depth in their bowling reserves, but Rabada’s experience and strike power will be sorely missed. His recovery will be crucial for South Africa’s long‑term success.
