In the wake of the devastating tornado that ravaged parts of Tongaat earlier this month, Radio Al Ansaar partnered with Al Ansaar Outreach to deliver much-needed support to the affected communities on Monday (10 June 2024). This initiative saw the convergence of media and humanitarian efforts, exemplifying the spirit of solidarity and community support.
Razia Rangrage, the host of the popular show Urban Woman, and Zahir Bassa from The Social Network, took their broadcasts on the road, presenting their shows live from the heart of Tongaat. The live broadcasts not only brought real-time updates to listeners but also helped amplify the urgent needs of the affected areas.
The team visited several hard-hit locations including the Seatide Combined School, the Jan Ross area, and Naidoo Road. Their presence provided a boost of morale to residents reeling from the tornado’s destruction.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, the team was able to distribute a variety of essential items. These included hot meals, bread, water, blankets, clothes, toys, hygiene packs, canned food, and other critical supplies. The relief effort aimed to address both immediate and longer-term needs, ensuring that families had access to nutritious food, clean water, and other necessities.
For all involved, the experience was profoundly moving. “It was definitely a humbling experience,” said Razia Rangrage, reflecting on the day’s events.
The hands-on involvement of the Radio Al Ansaar team and the broader community highlighted the power of collective action in times of crisis.
As Tongaat begins the long journey of rebuilding, the contributions and support from initiatives like this one provide a crucial foundation for recovery. Radio Al Ansaar and Al Ansaar Outreach continue to stand with the community, committed to ongoing support and assistance.
