In a significant development for the provision of justice services in KwaZulu-Natal, Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, John Jeffery, and Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala, are set to officially inaugurate the newly refurbished Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court on April 19, 2024.
The reopening of the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court underscores the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development’s commitment to enhancing access to justice through strategic infrastructure upgrades in historically underserved communities. The refurbishment project, overseen by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, aligns with its mission to construct and allocate vital infrastructure to government departments, ensuring essential services reach the public efficiently.
Pat Moodley, the head of KZN’s Department of Justice, says the court desperately needed a facelift.
“Chatsworth has grown both residential components as well as the economic hub in that area has grown, and the court has become insufficient for the needs required to serve.”
The revamped court complex features a state-of-the-art design with enhanced security measures, offering seven modern courtrooms tailored to meet diverse legal needs. These include three District Courts, a dedicated Family Court, a Regional Court, an Equality Court, and a victim-centric Sexual Offences Court.
