Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal — Tuesday, 28 October 2025: The iconic Oyster Box Hotel has cemented its place among the world’s finest luxury destinations after being awarded South Africa’s highest hospitality distinction — the coveted 5-Star Premium Grading — by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA).
The milestone makes the Oyster Box the first hotel resort in KwaZulu-Natal and one of only 23 properties nationwide to hold this elite title, reaffirming the province’s growing reputation as a world-class travel destination.
The prestigious handover ceremony was attended by a full house of industry leaders, tourism officials, and media, including MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Reverend Musa Zondi, KZN Tourism and Film COO, Jackie Motsepe, and TGCSA Chief Quality Assurance Officer, Bronwen Auret.
Speaking on behalf of Premier Thami Ntuli, MEC Rev. Zondi hailed the achievement as a defining moment for KwaZulu-Natal’s tourism landscape.
“The Oyster Box is a jewel in the crown of KwaZulu-Natal tourism — a living symbol of service, heritage, and world-class hospitality,” Zondi said. “This award confirms that KwaZulu-Natal can compete shoulder-to-shoulder with the best destinations on earth.”
Jackie Motsepe, Chief Operations Officer of KZN Tourism and Film, described the accolade as a celebration of KwaZulu-Natal’s enduring spirit of hospitality.
“This recognition is a tribute to everyone who upholds the KwaZulu-Natal spirit of warmth and excellence — from our beaches and mountains to our boutique hideaways and iconic resorts,” she said.
Echoing those sentiments, Bronwen Auret of the TGCSA praised the hotel’s unwavering commitment to quality and consistency.
“The Oyster Box has raised the bar for South African hospitality,” Auret remarked. “They have set a benchmark of authenticity, consistency, and world-class service that inspires the entire industry.”
Following the ceremony, guests were treated to an exclusive tour of some of the hotel’s most prestigious rooms — a showcase of why the property earned its 5-Star Premium status. Each suite captures the essence of coastal luxury, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean where guests can “listen as the waves crash against the rocks” and soak in the natural beauty of Umhlanga’s blue skies and golden beaches.
With this latest accolade, The Oyster Box Hotel not only reinforces its legacy as an icon of elegance and hospitality but also places KwaZulu-Natal firmly on the map as a destination of global distinction.
