Warm Bowls, Growing Need: Third Haleem Distribution Draws Strong Community Response

Pietermaritzburg — The third Al Ansaar haleem distribution this Ramadan once again brought together volunteers, community members, and families in a spirit of compassion and unity. While the initiative has already become a familiar part of the Ramadan outreach programme, this week’s distribution revealed something noteworthy — a visible increase in people arriving directly at the site in search of assistance.

Unlike previous weeks, where many recipients had been pre-identified through community networks, volunteers observed a growing number of walk-ins approaching the distribution point. Some came on foot, while others arrived in vehicles hoping to receive a warm meal to take home for iftaar.

The distribution was structured to accommodate both pedestrians and a drive-through system, allowing volunteers to serve people efficiently while maintaining order. A rough count conducted by volunteers during the drive-through period indicated that approximately seventy vehicles passed through the collection point during the distribution.

Organisers say the figure reflects not only the popularity of the initiative, but also the increasing need within the community as families navigate rising living costs.

“Haleem has become more than just a meal,” one volunteer noted. “For many families it represents relief, even if just for one evening. Seeing more people coming through each week reminds us why this effort is important.”

Large pots of freshly prepared haleem were transported to Pietermaritzburg from Durban earlier in the day, where volunteers coordinated the logistics of portioning and distributing the meals. The process involved a team of helpers who managed serving stations, traffic flow, and walk-in recipients.

Despite the growing turnout, the atmosphere remained calm and organised, with volunteers ensuring that those waiting were assisted as quickly as possible.

The initiative forms part of Al Ansaar’s broader Ramadan outreach programme, which focuses on supporting vulnerable communities during the holy month through food assistance and community engagement.

With two successful distributions already completed earlier in Ramadan, organisers say the continued turnout underscores both the generosity of donors and the commitment of volunteers who make the project possible.

As the programme continues, organisers hope the effort will not only provide nourishment, but also strengthen the sense of solidarity that Ramadan encourages.

For many recipients, a simple bowl of haleem offered more than just sustenance — it served as a reminder that during Ramadan, communities stand together to support one another.
