The incident prompted major cryptocurrency companies to immediately freeze billions of dollars in assets. Meanwhile, Binance temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals while investigators work to establish the extent of the damage. According to the Associated Press, Binance confirmed the estimated financial impact on Thursday, 29 October. However, the company has not yet established exactly how much cryptocurrency the attackers actually stole. Are Customer Funds Safe After the Binance Hack?
Binance assured customers that their money remains protected despite the ongoing investigation. The company stated that security teams were urgently reviewing the incident. They found no evidence of leaked private security keys protecting their cryptocurrency wallets. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao acknowledged that the incident appeared to be a targeted attack. Writing on X, Zhao said he expects full coverage for all customer funds. However, these assurances arrive while investigators continue working to establish the total financial impact.

Major cryptocurrency companies took rapid action to prevent the transfer of potentially stolen assets. According to Reuters, Tether and Circle froze a combined $2.38 billion following the suspected security breach. Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino confirmed the freezing of approximately $1.57 billion. Circle chief executive Jeremy Allaire said his company froze more than $800 million. Allaire confirmed that Circle is fully cooperating with law enforcement to support the ongoing investigation.
Binance separately reported that they managed to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. However, frozen cryptocurrency does not necessarily mean the money is fully recovered or returned to customers.
What Does This Security Breach Mean for Investors?
This major investigation comes amid mounting pressure on global cryptocurrency markets. According to the Associated Press, Bitcoin fell 3.2% on Thursday evening and dropped below $79,000.
