A Historic Opportunity for the City Durban’s selection as South Africa’s preferred city to bid for the 2036 or 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games creates exciting economic opportunities for local businesses. This potential growth specifically targets the tourism, hospitality, and service industries.

The South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC) made the official announcement on Thursday, 29 October 2026. This decision places Durban at the absolute centre of South Africa’s ambition to bring the Games to African soil for the very first time. A successful Durban Olympic bid will attract thousands of international visitors. This influx will create massive demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport services, and entertainment.

Empowering Local Businesses and Entrepreneurs

The Durban business community now has a unique opportunity to benefit from increased tourism, investment, and general economic activity. Small and medium-sized enterprises can directly supply goods and services during the extensive preparation and hosting stages. The potential economic benefits extend far beyond the hospitality industry. Construction, logistics, retail, and other vital sectors will benefit heavily from rapid infrastructure development and increased commercial activity.

Speaking to Radio Al Ansaar, Thuthukani Ndlovu, a business owner based in the Durban CBD, shared his optimism. He stated the announcement could create massive opportunities for local businesses, provided organizers include them early in the planning and procurement processes. Many other local business owners share this sentiment.

“I’m happy that Durban has been given this opportunity. As small business owners, we believe this could create opportunities for our businesses to grow, attract more customers and benefit from the increased economic activity that the Games could bring to the city,” Ndlovu noted.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila warmly welcomed the announcement. He described the Durban Olympic bid as a rare opportunity to showcase Africa’s true potential and strengthen its presence on the international sporting stage.

“This is more than a sporting ambition. It is an opportunity to make history, celebrate Africa’s potential, and put our continent on the global sporting stage. The journey begins now,” said Mzila.

Infrastructure Investment and the Road Ahead

The proposed bid also places renewed attention on vital infrastructure investments. These include upgraded transport systems, new accommodation facilities, and modernized sporting venues. Such developments will hold lasting economic value if they address existing community needs long after the event concludes.

Although Durban currently stands as the preferred city, South Africa has not yet secured the official hosting rights. The country will present its detailed hosting vision to the International Olympic Committee’s Future Host Commission in November 2026.

This moment represents a potential economic turning point for the coastal city. The ultimate challenge remains ensuring that any future investment translates into sustainable growth, new employment opportunities, and tangible benefits for all local communities.
