Ukraine Challenges Google Over Russian Search Results

Ukraine’s language commissioner has formally written to Google. The action follows complaints from soldiers and military veterans. Users noted that web queries entered in Ukrainian were returning Russian-language search results. The issue raised serious concerns among officials about how the search algorithm processes national language preferences.

Olena Ivanovska, Ukraine’s Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, confirmed the outreach. Her office contacted Google headquarters directly after receiving formal user complaints.

According to Ivanovska, several Ukrainian users received Russian-language results based on location. This occurred even when users typed search queries strictly in Ukrainian.

Why Ukraine Is Challenging Google

The State Language Protection office wants a detailed explanation from Google. The agency asked the tech giant to clarify its indexing and language-handling procedures in an official letter.

Beyond search preferences, the commissioner raised broader concerns about the Ukrainian language online. She called for increased government investment in technology infrastructure.

Ivanovska warned that younger generations might use online spaces where Ukrainian is absent. To address this long-term risk, she proposed creating a national digital database. The database will collect Ukrainian words, grammatical forms, and regional dialects to train artificial intelligence models more effectively.

Google’s Response and Current Status

Reports do not yet include an official response from Google regarding the complaint. Furthermore, no evidence shows that Google intentionally prioritized Russian content over Ukrainian sources.

Ukrainian authorities are currently waiting for formal clarification from Google. They want to know if the company will take steps to fix the language display discrepancy.
