Passport Fraud Syndicate Dismantled in KwaZulu-Natal
 
Investigators from the Hawks have arrested five individuals in Durban, including a former Home Affairs official, for their involvement in a passport fraud ring spanning branches in Durban, Isipingo, and Eshowe.
The suspects allegedly facilitated the issuance of fake South African passports to undocumented foreign nationals in exchange for payments between R300 and R1,500. One individual was caught with keys to the department’s offices and a large cache of stolen passports  .
All suspects face charges of fraud, corruption, and immigration-related offences. Authorities are working with Home Affairs to audit impacted offices and anticipate further arrests as investigations continue .
 
Youth Parliament in KZN Demands Curriculum and Infrastructure Overhaul
 
The KwaZulu‑Natal Youth Parliament has urged government officials to urgently reform the education system to better equip youth for global job markets.
Delegates emphasized the need for teaching digital technology, entrepreneurship, and critical thinking—highlighting a curriculum misaligned with the demands of the 21st-century workforce. Deputy Speaker Mmabatho Tembe praised the strong participation and urged swift action on infrastructure upgrades in rural schools  .
The session, themed “Bridging the Gap through Education, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship,” took place at Bulwer Hall and marked a clear call for policy change  .
 
Ireland Begins Citizen Evacuations from Israel and Iran
 
Ireland has evacuated 15 of its citizens from Israel and Iran amid escalating regional tensions sparked by recent airstrikes between the two countries  .
Tánaiste Simon Harris described the situation as “very volatile” and confirmed additional Irish nationals had requested evacuation, with embassy operations adapting to changing security conditions  .
The Irish government, in coordination with EU partners, is actively preparing for further evacuations and urging nationals to stay registered and informed .
 
Pope Leo XIV Calls for Urgent Diplomacy in Middle East
 
Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, delivered a powerful address from St. Peter’s Square on 22 June, urging global leaders to seek diplomatic solutions to the Israel–Iran crisis. He warned that continued hostilities threaten an “irreparable abyss” and advocated for humanitarian aid corridors into conflict zones  .
His remarks followed aggressive airstrikes by Israel and correspondent strikes from Iran, with civilian casualties mounting. This marks one of his first major international appeals since his election in May  .
 
NATO to Host Emergency Summit in The Hague
 
NATO defence ministers will convene an emergency summit in The Hague (24–25 June) to address evolving global security threats, including the Middle East escalation and rising cyberwarfare concerns .
Discussions will likely focus on increasing military spending targets to 5% of GDP, enhancing rapid response capabilities, and bolstering collective cybersecurity strategies. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasised the alliance’s readiness to address hybrid and technological threats.
