Police confirmed that officers found the body of a woman in a river in Clayville, near the Mall of Thembisa, on 7 September. Acting Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Major‑General Fred Kekana said investigators will include this case in the broader probe into multiple deaths in and around Kempton Park.
The woman, believed to be in her late twenties, was found with most of her clothing missing. A preliminary examination showed no visible wounds. Forensic teams will complete further tests to determine the cause of death.
This discovery raises the total number of women found dead in the wider Ekurhuleni area since July to seven. Four bodies were recovered in recent days, which has increased concern among residents and local leaders.
Police formed a multidisciplinary task team to investigate whether the deaths are linked. Investigators are using forensic analysis, witness interviews, and crime scene reconstruction as they work to establish timelines and possible connections between cases.
Authorities cautioned that they have not yet confirmed a serial killer. However, residents fear a pattern because of the number and proximity of the discoveries. Police continue to gather evidence and urge anyone with information to come forward.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant‑General Puleng Dimpane are expected to consult with the task team. President Cyril Ramaphosa has directed police to prioritise the investigations and to provide regular updates.
So far, investigators have positively identified two of the seven victims. One suspect arrested in July in connection with an earlier death remains in custody. Police said they will release more details as forensic results and identification processes conclude.
Residents and community groups have called for increased patrols and better lighting in public spaces. Meanwhile, police urge people to report suspicious activity and to avoid isolated areas until investigators provide further guidance.
